Does anyone recommend a gel pad for long trips?

Hey Folks, I would like to improve the comfort of the seat on long rides. I was wondering if a gel pad is a good idea in terms of increasing comfort. Obviously I'd prefer a Sargent seat but can't spend that much right now. What do you think? Thanks a lot. Patrick

I got an Alaska Leather Sheepskin Buttpad, and it was a big help on the 500 mile+ days I did in November.

There is an advrider.com discount, and the service was great.

I just received a hunter's Bunsaver self inflating air cushion (similar to a Thermarest pad) from a GS rider buddy in Wisconsin (they're sold at Fleet Farrm up there) who likes these for his long distance rides with a sheepskin on top (he's a 1/2 million miler at BMWMOA). Haven't tried it myself yet, but will let you know when I do.

See it here:

An Airhawk seat cushion is quite good. I used one with an Alaska buttpad over it on some cross country trips and was real happy with the results.

Good idea except you will be getting into GS seat height territory and you would need a seatbelt ! You can only pile up so much stuff on the seat ! My Airhawk and Alaska Pad setup was about as high as I would want to go.

I just got my seat re-worked by Spencer Moto in Florida. He re-places the original foam and re-shapes the seat. He will also add gel for $25 extra.

He turned my seat around in one week at a total cost of $75 plus shipping.

Initial feel is tremendously improved from stock. Unfortunately, we still have 8" of snow here in N.E. Ohio -- a test ride will have to wait.

Eqyn,

That sounds like an interesting solution, do you have any pics? Perhaps I could take a look at it sometime actually, I believe that I live practically around the corner from you. I have a tall seat on my R that I reshaped the foam to be almost flat and angled back a bit so there is no more sliding forward. Huge improvement over the original shape, but still not a Sargent seat.

I'd cast my vote for the sheepskin, I've had one for 25 years and used the same one on many different machines, Suzuki's, Honda's, Ducati's, and on my R. Never tried the AirHawk other than to sit on one in dealer display, seemed to add too much height.

Sheepskin increases comfort in hot and in cold climates. And on very long (800 miles in a day) rides. And improves the comfort on my Sargent seat as well. :D

Good Luck!

fallingpine,

Happy to have you stop by and take a look. The pics couldn't even pick up the difference between new and stock - it is very subtle - but the feel is much different.

PM me if you want to make contact.

There is no substitute for http://www.day-long.com
If you are going to use the bike for a long trips, pay up and never look back.
In my case, it was "MONEY WELL SPENT".
Good Luck.

Every police bike 'round here seems to have sheepskin, or at dead-ringer made from artificial fleece. My Alaska Leather pad added comfort far in excess of its cost. :D
