Check your starter motor cables for tightness!

Post by Dauntless »

My '04 R1150R has always been slow to crank. A few days ago my battery died so I replaced it with an Odyssey PC 680 which arrived today. After installing it, I crank the motor and it is slow and I see smoke coming from the starter. I get angry thinking that my starter might be bad. After an hour of searching for posts that might give me a clue as to what the problem was, I get the idea to check all the cables for tightness. It turns out that the main cable was loose. I tightened it, and now the starter spins like never before. :D

Here you go!

It's the nut on top where my voltmeter probe is pointing.

Just take off the starter cover.

Let me know if yours is loose too.

Cheers! Will check it. I used that one and the exhaust clamp to jump my bike from the car battery once but never checked tightness.
