leaking Master Cylinder. Re build or Replace?

Post by joelh »

As I work through various maintenance issues with my 96, I have discovered that the front master cylinder has a leak. I read that this was a known problem with mid 90's R bikes. Should I consider rebuilding or would I be better off replacing? Beemer Boneyard sells a cylinder for $200 that is a bolt on replacement.

1996 R1100R leaking Master Cylinder. Re build or Replace?

Many years ago, I replaced the entire master cylinder on my '96 R1100R. It was costly, over $300 as I recall.
At the time, repair kit parts were just not readily available. As important as good brakes are to safety,
I would probably get the Beemer Boneyard $200 MC.

I'm curious, What did you end up doing ?

Nothing yet. I have been traveling quite a bit and have not had time to deal with it. I think I am going to get the cylinder from Beemer boneyard and just swap the whole thing out.

I just rebuild mine with a 50 pound kit from Motobins. Relatively easy and quick plus a good money saver. Just don't spill brake fluid on the bodywork :(
