Riding in very high winds, at speeds between 70-90mph, with BMW saddlebags, and the Z-Technik windscreen I ran out of gas 12 miles out of town, with 199.6 miles on the trip-meter, and 20 miles to go on the computer. Before this I had been going 220 miles on a tank with the sports screen, and no luggage.

I've found that above 70 on the R, mileage goes down dramatically. A couple of weeks ago, I had about a 100 mile highway run at 70-90, and got about 32MPG. Knocked down to 60 for the next 100 highway, I got 53MPG.Tarmac wrote:Riding in very high winds, at speeds between 70-90mph, with BMW saddlebags, and the Z-Technik windscreen I ran out of gas 12 miles out of town, with 199.6 miles on the trip-meter, and 20 miles to go on the computer. I typically use 180 as my upper bounds for highway riding, but use 220 for secondary roads.

Motorcycles are not very aerodynamic for sure and do suffer more than many might think at higher speeds. I just ran my K75C across Texas (800miles) at 80mph with saddle bags loaded. I got 39MPG for the trip.
The Wife's Ninja 250 did 50MPG on the same trip while it can do close to 70MPG around town.

I ran out in Wisconsin at 200 mi. I was hitting it hard but what caught me out was the switch from my '09 single cam to my '11 Double cam. The double routinely gets about 5mi a gal less than the single ( bike was too new for me to know this yet). I got lucky as I was 5 mi from the station. I opened the tank to check for sure and this must have released some vacuum pressure in the tank. I closed it and hit the start button and it fired so I baby'd it the 5 miles. When I filled it the pump said I took 5.73 gals...

Re: Trusted the computer: RAN OUT OF GAS!!!!
While I only have about 600 miles on my '12 R1200R, at the last fill up, according to my odometer, I drove 252 miles on that tank of fuel. I drive about 90 miles a day, (42-45 miles each way, depending on the route I take, including going out for lunch). The fill up before that saw 235 miles on that tank of fuel.
I have the small windscreen, no panniers or any other add-ons.
While I'm not naive' enough to believe the miles to go feature as the last word, I can only say I've been lucky so far. As I put more miles on the bike and when I put panniers and other options on, I'll to see how much the fuel economy will be affected.

Re: Trusted the computer: RAN OUT OF GAS!!!!
I just drove my 09 R1200R 265 miles. The computer was showing 58 mpg and 60 miles to empty. I filled up with exactly 4.6 gallons.
Pretty good.
BUT
As you can see, I was using the trip.
I think as long as the computer is showing I'm getting 55 mpg or better I'll feel comfortable going 250 miles before filling up. But even that is irrelevant to me as i always stop for a break every 60 or so miles anyway.

Take it from someone who spends his days flying lawyers. Gas gauges and fuel computers are gimmicks!
