Just discovered R1150RT's have oil temp sender & gauge - ?

Post by macx »

Just browsing eBay to see what's on there for parts, saw an oil temp sender for an RT.

A quick, simple search turned up posts with RT owners talking about their oil temp gauges with needle
and red zone, etc. So not an on/off light but an actual gauge.

Anyone know where the oil temp sender mounts to the engine?

I looked in an online BMW parts fiche and couldn't find it.

Thinking maybe one could be fitted to an R engine?

Do a search on oil temp gauge, CycleRob has a nice write-up with pics on how to go about it.

Yes, I've seen that one some time ago.

I was thinking, however, that the oem setup on the RT's apparently have direct oil contact with the sender.

Here's what it looks like

That sender is specific to the RT police bikes, by the length of the sensor element I would guess that either it goes in place of a oil galley plug, or a specific location was drilled and tapped for it's installation. I don't think it would go in place of the oil pressure sensor.....you wll also need the gauge that complements that sending unit.

There are several owners in this forum that have aquired RTP bikes, maybe posing a question is the way to go or locate a dealer that services RTP bikes.

Good luck.....

My RS ('04) has oil temp sending unit and a digital bar gauge - no numerals - just 10 bars the last two of which are 'in the red zone'

I found the thing in the oil cooling schematic in my service manual. It's in a cast
passageway on the top right of the block in the oil stream just before it gets to the
thermal control that opens to let hot oil go to the coolers, or stays closed to prevent that.

I'm swapping transmissions right now so looked on mine and found it right where the
schematic shows. It's the sensor that basically just turns the temp warning light on
when the oil gets too hot. I don't know if it would work with a gauge or not, or if it's
just on or off.

It's fairly easily accessible just by removing the tank, so later will try getting that
adapter and that mini gauge set and see what I can do. The oil press sender for
that set is kind of large and there isn't much room around the stock oil pressure
sender on the front left of the block just above and behind the sight glass.
Might take a little creative plumbing.
