Heated Grips
I have read the forum on heated grips and my throttle side is no longer heating up. My question is should I try to pull it apart to see if there is a broken wire or should I order an after market heated grip and replace it?
Re: Heated Grips
Some people have had problems with the zip ties behing the headlight being too tight and wearing through the wires.

Re: Heated Grips
I just had my left hand one failed. Checked it out and found the heater was fine, just both the wires broken. Cut the wires and replaced. Work fine now.
Re: Heated Grips
Hey, joe bar - curious to know where the wires broke?

Give it a go what do you have to loose? Cheeper to fix it if you can. My $0.02 worth

Re: Heated Grips
This heated grip failure problem must be spreading like a virus. First my throttle side went out and now the other side stopped working too. I am not very skilled at troubleshooting electrical problems but I would love to avoid going to the dealership if I can. Where do these wires usually break? If one grip side went out before the other what might be the significance of that?
Thank you for your help.

Re: Heated Grips
Careful replacing it with a factory new one - I have a dead grip come as a replacement from the factory. The only way to check is with ohm meter!
Re: Heated Grips
I just took a right side heated grip off my Rockster.
I will sell it if you're interested. $60
I was a little ambitious taking the spade connectors out of the socket and one came off. A little solder and a new spade and you're done. It works great. It's the ribbed grip style. Not worn out. I replaced both heater grips when the left one broke. Removed at 5300 mi.

Re: Heated Grips
I think there are a couple of aftermarket options listed in the Aerostich catalog.

Aerostich does list a couple of options, but I can't see that they would be better than the integrated heaters sold by BMW. Anybody try them ?frbank6 wrote:I think there are a couple of aftermarket options listed in the Aerostich catalog.

Re: Heated Grips
I have been clipping zip ties for the last few weeks and finally found the right one. My heated grip is now working. It seemed to be the zip tie behind the headlight assembly. It was smashed and pressing against two other wires. I cut the zip tie and massaged the wire back to a round shape and all is working fine. Thanks for the help, I am sure the dealership would have charged me for a new set of grips.

Re: Heated Grips
Hottech,
You've only made a temporary fix. The power wire is broken internally, not just squashed flat. Your grips will not only NOT get the full current needed to obtain full heating, the smooshed together broken ends will separate soon . . . . . leaving you cold. At least you know where the trouble zone is and can solder in a parallel repair section wire.

Re: Heated Grips
What guage wire should I run parallel ? Is there any advantage to increasing the wire guage? Sounds like bypass surgery.

Re: Heated Grips
Any wire repair should be the same or fatter wire gage. It must not be smaller, or it may become too hot and perish as an overloaded fusible link. Larger (slightly) is preferred as it'll transfer full power with minimal losses. Even speaker wire or one side of an A.C. lampcord will do if you are creative, lazy, thrifty or all 3. It'll be hidden or covered with electrical tape so there's no appearance issue. Just be sure to make shiny bright solder connections (indicates correct solder heat/melting and stationary cooling).

Re: Heated Grips
I just installed new grips on My Wife's Ski Doo. I bought the hot grips brand. They also have a listing for the r1150r, they work with the factory wiring. $60 from dennis kirk.
However I'm with cyclerob, I believe the wires are damaged and must be repaired. I have had my handle bars of and noticed that the wires to the grips are very small. I rearranged them at that time and they still work. If they do fail, a proper repair will probably allow them to last for while longer.
