Spain into France 2008, back road over the Pyrenees

Post by AdeDavies »

The kids have grown up now and the wife and I decided it was time to do something we had always wanted, travel from Northern Spain, up through France and catch the ferry back...........only the wife didn't quite know what she was letting herself in for. We had stayed at a campsite in northern Spain and I'd set the GPS to take us to the next campsite in southern France, trouble was I'd mistakenly set the GPS to take us over the Pyrenees by the shortest route, this meant taking all the back roads, cart tracks and footpaths, at one point it tried to take us over a 300 year old footbridge 2 feet wide with boulders blocking the entrance, No picture of that but here's a picture of dejected wife staring at the source of her torment, every time we went round a bend I could hear a wailing noise in my ear, I'd mistakenly told her the bike, plus gear and ourselves weighed nearly half a ton, plus the pot holed roads added to her misery. We made it OK, the bike never missed a beat in 1300 miles.
Wife is feeling a lot better now and already planning next years trip to the continent, should have done this years ago, one of the best holidays we have had for a long time.

The first stop off the ferry, Lekunberri in Northern Spain:

and the campsite:

A quick stop for lunch before the second campsite, try and spot the bike.

The second campsite, in France, Hagetmau in the south.

And the lovely provincial town, (I'd move there next week if I could).

French Backroads, thank you GPS!

This one is called 'call of nature' for two reasons. ;)

DJ, I've added a few more in the main post above, I've tried to avoid posting generic holiday snaps and only added the ones that I hope give a flavour of the places we visited and the varied scenery, oh, and a few with the bike in as well.

Ade,

Looks like a great ride did the wife get a polka dot jersey for her spirited efforts(king of the moutains!!)?
Can't get the missus' to go on the back with me so off to France(Voseges)/Germany(Black forest) next week with some mates. Will post some photos when I get back.

No Polka dot jersey, just a very nice Bordeaux red to steady her nerves, she was fine the rest of the way up through France, still had to keep buying bottles of red wine though, she became addicted to the stuff, got a bit nasty if I tried to take the bottle off her, she's had to go cold turkey since we got back. Safe journey over the east side, never been that far over, Dijon is my limit so far, looking forward to seeing your photos.
