I rode the hell out of my bike today

Post by vwdoctor »

Nice ride to work and back. 70 miles total (there and back). 30 miles of interstate
(60 total). Damn it, it is so hard to stay legal with this bike. It wants to go. I stopped riding my V65 since I thought that one would kill me, but it just might the Rockster that does me in.

YAY!

Im trying to get some riding in. its getting awfully cold. rode it to work today 29 this morning. high in the low 50's today.

I rode it because next week... looks terrible. BELOW 40 for HIGHS :x

I agree on "it wants to go" in 6th, mine just sails. 85, 90.. perfectly comfortable. i think rocksters are geared a tad lower on 6th, though?

ride safe =D>

Rockster is definitely geared lower in 6th. I rode a regular 1150 before buying a Rockster and there was a noticeble drop in rpm between 5th and 6th gear. I guess gearing is taken from the S model. Actually, most of the the Rockster is the S model, dash, front suspension, handlebars, maybe rear suspension....
It tops out at 120(redline) but it gets there quick. It is really a pleasure to ride at 80-90. This is the time in Florida when you want to be ATGATT, not so much in July

cool.

yeah all the other gears..theres a 500rpm or so change between them. until 5-6, its close to 1000rpm.. perhaps my only design complaint on the R. 5 should be a little more centered between 4 and 6. and 1st should be lower, or 2nd higher -one of the 2. its kind of waste to shift 1-2....

I always wondered...is the GS even lower in 1st? Never ridden one. Id like to. I was watching "long way round" on netflix last night AGAIN(love that documentary) watching those guys chug up hills and sand on their 1000lb+ GS's... eek. Picture myself riding my R that way...and it tires me out thinking of the clutch work you'd have to do LOL

as far as riding geared up... this years been weird for me. I only remember maybe a week and a half or so where I felt too hot for full gear. Always wore my jacket... it was not the best year to be a boating enthusiast either... Al Gore lied to me.    thats a joke, not an invitation to debate climate change. 8)

but srsly. brrr...still waiting.

Rockster and GS gear ratio specs:

Same, 1st through 6th.

And yes, vwdoctor, the Rockster fits the lyrics well:

thanks sweatmark.

yeah its all different from the standard R.

http://www.bmw.com.mo/spec/r1150r.pdf

6th is .8 vs .7. but the primary is totally different too...

interesting.

you can totally say the rockster/gs is geared for "hooliganism" :) IE: low speed torque.

It was bad weather here today. 50 and rain but I rode again. Rain gear and all. I am planning a cross country trip in October so I have to get out there and get comfortable in bad weather.

Easy if you're in FL. I am in NY, single digits lately contributing to my PMS (parked mortorcycle syndrome).

Sadly very few people ride bikes here in the winter. I can't stand riding in Florida summers.

the Florida "winter" would be PERFECT riding. nice and cool. Fall, here in Iowa is fantastic.

My first motorcycle experience was california "Winter" or fall. growing up. dad would take me to Giants or 9'ers games at candlestick, on his gs1000. cold but not too cold when geared up. 8) I remember we'd be cruising home late at night, next to the bay, he'd turn around and smack me in the helmet, make sure I was awake...little did he know that was the coolest thing EVER, and was grinning from ear-to-ear. I remember listening to the sound of the chain rattling around the sprocket. going through the gears. Oh man.

BTW, that is my favorite memory.. Think about it every time I jump on my bike. and every now and again I even still search for the bike he sold a few yrs after we moved to Iowa. 1978 suzuki gs1000. litre muscle bikes. I WILL buy it or one like it and restore it someday.
