speedometer cable

Recently I had a clutch cable "snap" as I was riding that required a new one to be installed! Well...because my bike is 18 years I decided to change all the cables as a precaution! I ride a 1996 r850r with 107,000 miles on the clock.

The speedometer needs to be disconnected at the front wheel (no problem) and at the back of the speedometer (big problem). I removed the windshield, lossened the headlight and unscrewed the plastic cowling to access the cable where it screws onto the meter. After I unscrew the nut the cable is supposed to just drop down and disconnect from the meter.

No way...I cannot get the cable to disconnect. I pulled on it and sprayed some WD-40 on it and no luck!.I pulled on it again harder then a wanted to but no good. I'm afraid i may damage the meter if I pull any harder. According to the "hayes" manual the cable should just pull about..not happening.

Any Ideas? :-k

Wow...after I get this job done I get to do the throttle cables... Darn!

Thanks

No Takers......Anybody !
Winter is here and I like to do most of my maintanice this time of year. I searched youtube hoping to find a solution but no luck! I cannot get the cable to pull out from the speedo unit....pulling as hard as I can! NO GOOD
I sprayed wd-40 up toward the speedo, let it sit overnight and still NG. When I lossen the nut that holds the cable to the speedo it drops enough that I can do this but no luck.
Any Suggestions !
