Heated Grips Control

Post by WhiteDog »

On page 726 (electrical diagrams) in my Clymer manual, there is a "heater control" shown wired to the heated grips. I have not been able to find this on my '96 R1100RT, nor on the BMW parts fische. My cycle has a 3 position switch, which I assume is high, off and low from top to bottom. I have yet to remove the dash panel cover to access the switch but even if I did, I'm not sure how to test it. Does that "heater control" reside under the dash panel? Is there a way to test it?

I just replaced the switch on my 2000 R1100R, even though my instrument cluster is different, I'm sure the overall design is the same.

Yes, the 3 position switch is for the heated grips. The switch wires go from the cluster to a plug under the tank. I did not trace the entire system, but my guess is that the heated grip wires go from the grips to that same general area.

John, I'm thinking my switch might plug into a connector between the switch and under the tank. The parts fische states the switch is 210mm long, which is just over 8"--hardly long enough to reach under the tank. Did the switch solve your heating problems?

I stand corrected, the "Facelift Switch" for my bike does not list the RT in the part number.

However, changing the switch did fix my grips no warming up.

I solved my no heat grips by spraying electronic cleaner into the switch. There is a small hole on the back side of the switch which will allow the nozzle tube of cleaner to fit inside. While I could access the other switches, I pushed them loose and sprayed them, as well. "Love it when a plan comes together." BMW will have to wait longer to get some of my money.

Excellent!

I did try that with mine, but didn't get the same result. Of course, my bike sat outside for one or two years before I bought it...

The electronic cleaner I used came from Radio Shack. Expensive, but works well.

I have very warm grips now. Can feel the warmth thru Grip Puppies and leather gloves. Nice and toasty!
