Rear Drive Fluid Level

Post by mogu83 »

First I know the refill amount has gone from 230ml to 180ml.
On a recent trip at the 2,700 mile mark I noted a mist of oil around the rear seal and inside of back rim. Hard to tell how much oil caused the oily surface but it was enough to make me consider heading toward the closest BMW dealer. I cleaned the drive and rim and then opened the plug on the back of the drive, to reassure myself I had oil in the drive. Oil came out and it seemed under pressure, maybe half an ounce (15ml ?). After 600 miles no seepage at all around seal.

On Adv Rider some guys are saying that 180ml will fill the drive up to the bottom of the rear plug (2007 drive),on the center stand. They use that for the fill level. Has anyone done a refill to 180ml with the rear plug out. Would be interesting to know if the proper level was up to the plug like in most drives.

If so would it pay to open the plug and let the excess oil out. :?:

No it won't. With 180cc's on a change (actual quantity is more since not all the oil drains out) - the oil level IS above the drain plug. I checked when I changed mine last time. And ADV guys are usually talking about a GS which has a different geometry then ours when it's on the centerstand (longer travel suspension.)
