Don..thanks for your info in the BMWMOA PUB....I have 2008 BMW HAND PROTECTORS made for the 2008 R1200GS....ordered from MAX BMW...they are part# 71607706209.cost was $168.95...hand guards fit perfectly on my Dull SILVER 2007 R1200R....hand guards came within 4 days from RUSTY at MAX BMW parts dept in NH. This should end all of the discussion on the web regarding availability of these BMW HAND GUARDS.for the old part #71607697149 is no longer available...thanks again for all of your info and time put in for us riders of the great R1200R BMW's. Bill Neilsen, Medfield, Ma. 02052...(600,000 plus miles on BMW's)...my bike has had zero problems with 4,570 miles.
I think Bill answered the question on if the '08 handguards will work..

Now someone get some and take some photos.. I'll be working on an update for all the articles I did for the MOA-ON.. and this should be in it.
Just ordered mine from Chicago BMW, I will post pictures after the install. (Paid 140 + shipping 9.50)

Graf, Yes that's the throttlemeister. The "bar end" on the right turns freely, but independently of the hand guard.

If you call the guys at Throttlemeister and tell them you have an "R1200R with GS handguards" they put together a hybrid kit for you that works great. You can't use the R1200GS kit intended for use with hanguards, because the handlebar diameters are different. You need the R1200R weights, but the R1200GS handgrip adapters.

Basically, the right hanguard attaches to a nicely machined distance piece that is concentric with the right bar-end weight, but remains fixed while the weight rotates around it. Works nicely for short breaks on the highway. I paid $151.20, including shipping. Throttlemeister is open 8-4 Central time. 414.464.6060

Kit Parts
1 FT Black (Throttlemeister FT) $110.00
2 GR1250 (Guard retainer) $11.00
2 OA1250 (Outer adapter) $11.50
2 SF855 (Mounting bolt) $5.00
2 IA400 (Inner adapter) $6.00
1 Shim Pack $1.50
Shipping $6.20

TR250TOM, did you have to reroute any of the cables or lines on your handlebars to mount your hand guards?

Thanks

Gary,

No I didn't. The install was quite easy, and didn't involve any "surprises."

I ride down to about 35F in the winter, which means I can ride in January here in Virginia. At those temps, I "ride", but I don't "tour" or cover much distance. I find that with the heated grips, handguards plus extensions, and a good set of winter riding gauntlets, my hands never get cold. Electric gloves are not necessary.

Cheers, Tom

Great! I commute pretty much year round from VA to NC everyday unless there is ice, that was my biggest complaint last year. The palms of my hands were nice and toasty but the backs were frozen.

Thanks

here's some more info on why people might be having trouble ordering the old-style handguards...

http://www.webbikeworld.com/BMW-motorcy ... d-problem/

"The product poses a risk of injuries because in the event of inappropriate handling, such as pulling roughly, hitting objects while manoeuvring, or if the motorcycle falls over, the hand protector on the handlebar controls can twist. It could then touch the handbrake or clutch control causing brake or clutch malfunction. In addition, if the twisted hand protector lightly touches and operates the handbrake control, the brake linings may touch the brake disc and the resulting heat generation would cause the brake pressure to build up which could slow down the front wheel, even so far as to block it.

Three incidents reported. "

The 08 hand guards - for the GS - are now available in the UK, I had a set fitted this week, on my R12200R, at Allan Jeffries in Shipley.

The hand guards are the standard 08 GS ones but the bar ends do require some re machining. I am sure that if you put out a request someone will be able to help you with the technical details.

Hi Don

Not necessarily idiots. It is not so hard to miss. I had an R12GS rental bike earlier this year and for a while I wondered what was wrong with the clutch play being zero......
......yes. The left handguard was very slightly turned. And I did not notice!
So if the same thing happens on the right side you might very slightly brake and very slowly heat up your braking system.....

I was able to put the new 08 GS handguards on my 08 R12R. They are workable but you need to switch the left and right mounting brackets. The angle does not work out correctly unless you do that. Also, shimming material would be helpful for the mount to the inside portion of the handlebars. I used the longer allenhead bolts from McMasterCarr. They are stainless steel. I also had to cut down the trim washer to be able to tighten the barend bolts.

Overall the installation looks ok. If you were not familar with the handguard issues, you would think they were made for the bike. The only issue I have at this time is not being able to get the barend bolts tight enough. The handguards don't move while riding but if you were to take ahold of one and try to move it, it would move.

At this point they do what I need them to do.

Just received the parts I needed from Throttlemeister and with your advice on switching the mounting brackets it took less than 30 minutes to install and take pictures of them installed. =D> The only parts we used from the hybrid kit were 2 of the Guard Retainers (GR1250) and the 2 mounting bolts (SF845). The guy my wife talked to told her there were only three parts needed, but we ended up not using the Outer Adapter (OA1250) that he put in the kit. Mind you she has a Karaoke on the bike now instead of the Throttlemeister. The guards are solid and no movement at all. I know everyone wants pictures to see - so here you go......
