I don't ride an R1200R, but I'm considering buying one.

I have also looked at bikes like the Kawasaki ZZR 600, the Suzuki GSX650F, Suzuki Bandit 1250S, Yamaha YZF-R6S, BMW F800ST, Suzuki SV650 (I've already had three), or maybe even a dualsport (like the Kawasaki KLR). I just haven't really narrowed things down. I also need to confess up front that I have simultaneously joined a BMW F800 forum, as it is also a strong candidate. I cut and pasted a few parts of my introductory post from there.

My current bike is a new Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic LT. It's a great ride, but I'm interested in also having a non-cruiser. I generally try to avoid owning two bikes at once, but I figure the cruiser is different enough from a BMW R1200R that I can justify it.

Comfort is sort of a big issue to me. I've got too many formerly broken bones to lean too far over a gas tank. I sat on an F800ST in August of last year, and I'm afraid it was a bit too uncomfortable for me. I'm willing to plan another visit to a dealership so I can give it a second chance, however. The R1200R is probably more the ergonomics I need. Plus, while I was at the dealership they let me test ride one of their R1200R bikes. I loved the engine, and the way it made power. I just hate spending the extra cash. Conssidering the naked SV650 is also on the shopping list, and it retails for less than half of what a R1200R costs... it makes me want to start swallowing some Prilosec.

About me. I live in southern Illinois (the Marion, Carbondale area). I grew up in central Virginia, and spent about a dozen years in the Army. When I got out of the Army, I decided I wanted to do something fun for a while, so I attended MMI. I went to their Phoenix campus, and initially took the Harley-Davidson electives. Later, I went back and took the Suzuki elective as well (the F.A.S.T. program). I think it's a pretty good school. I only worked briefly as a mechanic (at a Harley dealership, and later at an aftermarket shop) before being promoted to service manager. I served as a service manager at a Harley dealership for most of my career. We recently moved to southern Illinois, and I took a break from the industry.

The other thing I always try to brag about is my Iron Butt Association membership. In 2005 I rode from Texas to Laguna Seca to watch the MotoGP race. My buddy and I decided to ride the entire way back to Texas non-stop. We did 1,767 miles in 32 hours. I was on a Yamaha FZ6 at the time. I don't plan to ever try that again... but I like to brag about it. There are a couple links at the bottom of this post. One is a write-up I did about the Iron Butt ride, and the other is for a write-up I did about my motorcycle trip through Europe on a BMW F650. They're long, but there are pictures.

Here is a list of the bikes I’ve owned (pretty much in the order that I owned them):

1984 Kawasaki LTD 550
1985 Honda Rebel 250
1991 Harley-Davidson XLH-883 Sportster
1976 Yamaha XS360

1999 Ducati 750 Supersport
2000 Kawasaki Concours
1999 Ducati ST2

2000 Harley-Davidson XL883 Sportster
2002 Suzuki SV650
1981 Suzuki GS750L
2004 Buell XB12S Lightning
2003 Ducati 999 Monoposto
2004 Suzuki SV650
2003 Honda Metropolitan

Welcome to the forum! Now that's quite an introduction!
You should be proud of the IBA rides, that's quite a feat to accomplish. I've done a few IBA rides, 1150 in 24, and 1000 in 16 on my R so I can understand how hard 1700 would be, especially on a FZ6... It's really a mental and physical challenge, right on!
As for what bike to buy, you won't find anything but praise around here for the Roadster(except the unlucky very few who've had a antenna ring fail), and if you spend enough time looking around you might not be want to pass it up.... if you can find it in your budget to buy one.
The R is a great touring bike IMO with a few changes; screen, seat, barbacks, etc.... I put 32,000 miles on mine in the first 11 months and have been from where GS riders dare to go to dragging valve covers at Deals Gap - the R does it all quite well, in comfort and style with enough performance to keep you interested. There's plenty of nice bikes out there, but IMO few could fill as many different roles quite well as the R. The linked ABS, boxer engine, incredible reliabilty, ease of maintenance and telelever suspension are what separates this bike from the rest, among other things....
Now I haven't had nearly as many bikes as you, but owning a R I don't feel like I need any other bike right now or in the near future- well, maybe a small DS bike or a SuperMotard.....no no, I don't really need another bike.
You could always search and wait around for a used R to help with the premium cost...
Good luck in your decision....

Go Salukis!

No, I didn't retire. I stayed in for just twelve years and decided I'd had enough fun. After another six years in the motorcycle industry, I quit working so I could stay at home full-time and care for my three kids. So far, housewife has been the hardest job I've ever had. :P

I don't remember anyone named Tommy Linn from VMI; but my memory is pretty bad. Any idea what year he graduated?

Go Keydets!!!
