Oberon to Goulburn Sunday 13th, anybody here?

Post by dav »

I was parked on the side of the rode (having a smoke + taking pics).

So was there any NSW R12R members riding a grey R12R on the Abercrombie road on Sunday?

Peter, welcome to the fourm :D .

I was riding by myself, black with pin stripe. It was down in the valley just before the wood bridge, here's a pic of my rest stop, about 5mins later you rode past.

Thanks Davin! Yep, it was me, and I remember seeing you there next to the Abercrombie bridge.

For the benefit of others who live in Australia or who might visit, a great, scenic and quiet way to travel by bike from Sydney to Canberra is as follows:
Sydney - Windsor - Mt Victoria - Oberon - Taralga - Golspie ( via 10 k of easy unsealed road) - Crookwell - Gunning - Canberra. A brilliant 440 km ride.

I bought my RR after looking at this site for about a year (I have subscribed). Really grateful for the thoughtful, constructive and friendly discussion. Thanks to all of you!

Cheers,
Peter

I went t'other way across that bridge about a month earlier, so it wasn't me. Good day, though - Bundanoon / Goulburn / Oberon / Bilpin - about 550km all up. I was on the back roads into Canberra on 14 June, but ducking around on a Berrima / Bundanoon / Goulburn / Bungendore / Sutton run before getting new farkles installed at MIck Owen on 15 June ...

... and the poor thing had to languish until a quick run down Picton / up Jamberoo Mtn / Tourist Rd (behind Bowral-Mittagong, bumpy but a gorgeous bush to farm run) last Saturday. Lotsa Ducatis out but didn't see another BMW, save a tasty S1000R at the Robertson pie shop ...

I never seem to be able to link up with the Sydney R12R runs - usually on daddy-duty when you all go.

Another great road in the Oberon - Goulburn area is the Booroowa - Crookwell road. My map shows it as having an unsealed section, but almost the entire road was a brand new excellent quality surface. Lots of fast sweeping corners, and great scenery.

How long were the remaining gravel sections in total? I'm trying to include that road in a rally that can't have much (if any) dirt ... city exces on Ducati Streefighters etc (plus I hate dirt).

I was headed that way a few years ago and tried to guess the dirt lenght from goggle maps / satellite coz no maps seemed up to date. We had lunch in Crookwell and the locals advsied us against that run (over 30km of gravel and some of it very loose - or so they said), so we went through Trunkey Ck to Blayney instead (over about 20km of gravel) ...

Also, the Nowra-Nerriga road (Main Rd 92) is being sealed, so in a few weeks / couple of months there will be only 3km gravel left between the coast and Goulburn via that route (nb it's on the Goulburn side of Oallen Ford and is quite loose). I rang Gouburn / Mulwarree copuncil and the plan to seal about 800m over summer, so that's only 2km gravel on a great new bike route! Think Jamberoo Mtn / Fitzroy Falls / Kangaroo Valley / MR92 / Goulburn - Boorowa - Cowra / then the open ridge roads of the central west, back in via Rylstone / Bylong / Wollombi .... oh, hold me back!!

cheers
Bill

Bill,
I don't recall any gravel between Booroowa and Crookwell. There is about 10 km of easy gravel between Laggan and Taralga, if you wanted to link up with the Abercrombie road.
