My R of 13 yrs has a new owner. And me a 2005 RT.

Post by towerworker »

Found a deal I could not pass on. A 2005 RT with 44K and garage kept. Well well (alot) below all the book values. Plus it had some equipment the owner wasn't even aware of. Ztechnic exhaust, Signalminder, hyperlites, new Michelin Pilot 4's etc. In the past I had dismissed the thought of an RT because of shifting difficulties. The muscles in my left foot don't work because of a paralyzing illness 10 yrs ago. If you've been around this board for some time you might know of what I went thru 10 yrs ago with Guillian Barre Syndrome. In the last two years I've been working on simply lifting my left leg (and foot) to shift gears. Downshifting is easy, it was the upshifting that was a challenge.

Too long a story to retell here but suffice it to say I found the deal of 2020! My '04 R of 103,000 miles has gone to a local good home and I am excited as I can be to ride this '05. I've owned it just one week and still much to get used to but each time I get on it I get more excited. I love the exhaust note and the power windshield!

I'll work on posting a picture or two soon.

Oh.......btw.......first service was the antifreeze.

Enjoy the new ride, looking forward to seeing some pics!

Glad that you got to the antifreeze right away but with the warmer weather coming couldn't you have put that off for a while?

Actually a 50/50 mix of antifreeze (ethylene glycol) raises the boiling point of water by 11°. So there's a summer benefit as well to the service. :)

I remember your injury, great that you got thru that.
Sounds like a good deal, hope it works out for you, the RT is a really good traveler for sure.

Wayne, that looks really good, hope you get the time for some great touring on it. I've always enjoyed your contributions here on the board with the R bikes. Good Luck with the new bike.

Wayne, congrats on your new RT. Years ago I rented a 2005 RT out of Las Vegas for 3 days and it was a wonderful ride. Top speed in the desert was 124 mph! You will enjoy it. I have always loved the looks of the RT. Good choice. I still enjoy riding my 2003 R and use it for bombing the local backroads. 2 years ago I added a 2009 GS for travel and enjoy both bikes.

I'm really enjoying it so far. In some ways I miss the R's quickness of handling and weight. But hopefully this will change a bit after becoming fully accustomed to the RT. A bit more weight higher up (seemingly) is apparent when pushing it over hard in a tight turn. One thing I'm realizing more and more is the importance of being and remaining in shape. This bike has about 80 lbs on the R so I really need to work on leg strength. I lost so very much of all that 10 yrs ago now. I've regained much but have a ways to go. A couple years ago I had been thinking that if I ever replaced the R I should go to something lighter. Well it didn't work out quite that way! I've got to hit 100K on this one now.

I'm planning to go see my daughter later today for her birthday. She's about 2 hours south. When I spoke to her last weekend her fella asked me if I'd drive my truck so I could help him pick up a new gas grill from Lowes. I really hope he's already found a way and gone after it 'cause it's gonna be sunny and mid 60's today. I really wanna ride the RT!

Hey Towerworker. Congrats on the new bike! I haven't been on this forum much during this strange season. I was up around peaks of otter last month and did the BRP north and then home on a stupid hot day. Thought of you as I was near Waynesboro. My wife did a 90 mile ride with me and I'm ready to drag her cross country :D but she is not a big fan of riding pilion on the R. Besides the usual touring bikes, I am considering an RT. Have you ridden it 2-up?
