Restoration Project R1150R

Post by swamper »

I went to a car collectors open house yesterday, about 125 cars and motorcycles. There was a R1150R he had picked up at a storage unit sale that was in poor condition that he has lost his interest in and said he would sell it to me. I'm on the fence as it needs a lot of work and probably new parts.
History of the bike: It looks like a 2002 to me, Black paint didn't look close enough to see if it was an ABS model. The original owner left it at a storage yard in 2005 (Last Licensed), it shows 6,000 miles on the odo. I believe that to be correct as it has the original tires on it which show about 6,000 mile wear. It was outside stored so here is the bad. Being stored outside the sun has done a lot of harm to the bike. The plastics have bleached out and show that white milky coloration. Many of the hoses will need to be replaced. The biggest problem is the fuel tank. The filler lid had been broken off and missing and the tank opening shows a lot of rust. The tank has been taken off the bike as someone has started to restore the bike. They cut the fuel lines and some of the wiring to get the tank loose. The tanks paint is pretty scratched up as it looks like they damaged it in transit or treating it rather rough in the shop, may need to be replaced anyway. The seat is weathered and cracked with foam hanging out but the pan is good. The engine, wheels and frame paint seemed to be in really good condition. No metal shows signs of pitting, even the brakes looked good. Again the injector plastic housings have that bleached milky plastic look? There is a bullet looking aftermarket fairing surrounding the headlight. Hand grips where rubber rotted and falling off. It had an aftermarket muffler. No luggage but had the mounting system and rack. Bike didn't appear to have ever been dropped as it had original handlebars and end weights without scuffs. The rocker covers had no major scrapes but did have some scuffs from moving it around.
Anyway I wasn't looking for a project but have a hard time seeing stuff like this just go to waste. The guy isn't the type trying to sell stuff, he told me if I wanted it he would sell it for $1000 as he had lost interest in it and will probably never get to it. He said he had the title in hand.
Opinions welcomed?

What a way to ruin a three year old (at the time) bike. It’s expensive in my eyes but then I’m conditioned to cheap good value bikes in the uk.

I'd offer $500 as is, source a used tank, make a rat bike or cafe or unique custom.

For <$2500 you can find old R1150R examples that require little time & effort to rehab.

OK, I offered $600 and he came back with $700 so I took it. Will be picking it up tomorrow and bringing it home. Will evaluate exactly what we have then will decide what we want to do with it. I'd like to make some sort of custom day type cafe racer but that will be up to my son, the welder. LOL
Mostly I'd like to modify the rear to something like a R 9 T'ish. Low investment with a fun factor.

Sorting things out, so far the Fuel tank will need replacing, rusted out with holes. Found a tank on e-bay should be here in a week or so.

I will never, ever understand people who do this. They aren't mechanics, they're lazy charlatans.

Good on you for rescuing a bike that will hopefully have a long and fulfilling life in the future!

Don’t hesitate to ask for parts on here either.
I have a 2002 with various “extras” in a bin.
