Re: Windshield Turbulence

The trouble with most motorcycle windshields is they are too far away from the rider and almost vertical. Designers fit shields at the same angle as the front forks because they look better. One of the best shields BMW put on a motorcycle was on the early K100RT's. The shield swepped back closer to ...

Re: dash symbal

Removing the carbon canister or the purge valve won't show a light on the dash but it will show a fault on the OBD tester. The purge valve is under the front LH side of the fuel tank. Leave the valve plugged in and plug it's hose fittings. No fault codes will come up. Be sure and plug the hose fitti...

Re: I'd Like to Sit on a BMW Comfort Seat

I have a 08 R12R with the low comfort seat. I started with the standard seat that came with the bike, It was fair at best. I installed the low comfort seat and have no complaints. It's so much better than the OE seat that I haven't looked for anything else. I've used Corbin seats with success but so...

Re: 2011 and on R1200R has a breather plug on FD???

Don, I have a 08 R1200R and have had no issues with the final drive. I also have a R75/6, with 175,000 miles on it. The final has gone the distance. The drive splines on the ring gear do wear and are repairable. It has 4 tapered bearings all lubed by the gear oil. Other than repairing the ring gear ...

Re: Routing of fuel tank vent tubes

The carbon canister, if your bike has one, is right in front of the front shock. Hard to miss.

Re: Routing of fuel tank vent tubes

One of the hoses is the drain from the filer cap area. And it terminates down behind the gearbox by the RH foot peg. The other hose is a overflow or vapor line. For those who have the canister that hose goes to the canister and the canister vents to the LH throttle body. For those of you that had th...

Re: Fuel Strip (Again)

I have a 08 R12R that still has it's original fuel strip, it still works normally, knock on wood. I live in California, ethanol type fuel is all that's available here unless you buy race gas or aircraft gas. I do add Seafoam fuel additive from time to time. The marine industry likes the stuff as it ...

Re: Spring Mods

Don, You are very close with your numbers on gear oil vs motor oil. There are different numbers for gear oil vs motor oil. Back in the day before multi vis gear oil. SAE 90 gear lube was very close to SAE 50 motor oil. We used the same base stocks to make both products. The chemistry, chlorinated so...

Re: FAILED ABS Unit

It's not just BMW that has ABS problems. A friend with a 06 Yamaha FJR had the ABS pump fail recently. It was well kept, dealer serviced with 26,000 miles. ABS unit $1200. Dealer said Yamaha would not consider a good will replacement. Dealer was willing to sell a new pump at their cost, still expens...

Re: Long Distance with the R1200R

A R1200R is a great long distance machine, I've done several 500 to 800 mile days with mine.

I use a 18" C Bailey screen on the BMW mount and the OE comfort seat. I use the BMW bags and top box when I need them.

Re: OEM Touring Windscreen

I'm with Don on the first C Bailey 18" screen. I bought my bike with the OE touring screen, I think that was noisiest windshield I've been behind. After 4 other shields, the best was no shield at all, the 18" C Bailey with a 3/4" tilt seemed to be tolerable. Yah there is still some wi...

Re: Weeping oil cooler? Or the hose?

Don, I don't have a link to said parts, but they are available at most auto supply stores. We bought them, the metal shell, by the box in several sizes as we made oil lines and AC hoses in the shop. The crimping tool was expensive as it comes with several size dies for different size hose. I'll bet ...

Re: Weeping oil cooler? Or the hose?

Don, I'll bet it is the hose. I worked on Porsche's for 30 years and saw the same type of leak many times. Rather than replace a expensive oil line assy. I would repair them in the shop. I would cut the crimp off with a cut off wheel and used the same shells and crimping tool used on A/C hoses. The ...

David, I have the 900lb spring, it's a Hyperco, blue in color, 7" or 178mm long, 2 1/4" ID in as new condition.

I'd take $60 for it plus shipping.

Re: Springs 12 R1200R

David, I have replaced the 900lb spring with a 800lb spring I recieved from Ohlins, I set the preload to 12mm and have about 25mm of sag with me on the bike, compression and rebound are Ohlins original settings. It feels pretty good now but I have'nt ridden it very far. I'm going to round trip Phoen...

Re: Filing DOT complaints regarding the fuel strip

I had a 85 K100RS that had what BMW called a thermister that measured the temp of the fuel to turn on the low fuel lights. They worked for awhile untill the fuel got hot, whitch it often was in a K100. Mine was changed a couple of times but they were never reliable. I bought another K100 in 90, it h...

I have a 08 R12R with 30,000 miles on it with no final drive issues, I've ridden it to Arizona twice and incountered 110 deg temps. After the 600 mile service I changed the final oil a couple of times with the engine oil, And like Don say's, the oil comes out like it went in. I have a R75/6 with 170...

Re: Springs 12 R1200R

David, I made a 3/8" spacer for a friend of mine with a 08 RT, as he didn't want to spend the big bucks for a aftermarket shock. He would crank the preload to max and the sag was still a little low, with the spacer he was able to set the preload in the middle of the range. The spacer just helpe...

Re: Springs 12 R1200R

David, when I recieved the Ohlins shock the installed spring was 1062 lbs per inch and a 8mm pre load, it was way too stiff, I fiddeled around with the damping adjustments and it did'nt make much difference. I called Ohlins and told them I had measured the spring and thought it to be too high of spr...
