Seems to have been a rare breed. Here you can find some photos http://www.gespannservice.de/gespanne/bmw/r-modelle/

Re: RIMS: wire or 5-spoke rims. straight swap no mods

Yep she is. And it would be difficult to rebuild one today because some parts are simply unavailable (1150 a-arm, luggage rack, 1150 front wheel, etc).

Re: Will an R1100GS Front end mount to an R1100R?

Yes, damper = shocks ... And yes you are right, the lower fork bridge is also different and you need to take the one from the GS.

Re: Will an R1100GS Front end mount to an R1100R?

To my knowledge the fork would be the same. What is different is the front A arm and the front damper. You also need to change the rear damper otherwise your geometrie will be out of sync.

Re: RIMS: wire or 5-spoke rims. straight swap no mods

I had written about this some years back: The K1200RS (the flying brick and not the new 4-cylinder!) rear wheel (5") fits the r1100r without any modification! Just plug-on! The front wheel is a different story. You need the wheel of the R1150R (not the one off a Rockster!), the ABS ring of the ...

Re: transmission problem

The bearing of the shifter is simple plastic and if dirt/moist gets in there the result is the shifter gets stiffer at advanced age. If that is the case get yourself a new plastic bearing (or a new shifter). Or dismantle, clean, grease and put it on again.

Re: transmission problem

The gearboxes are common for idle problems. And on pre-M97 gearboxes problems (usually skipping gears) were quite common. Have a look here http://www.largiader.com/tech/oiltrans/ Suggest you keep on riding and observe if the problems get worse. You might also have a look at the shift lever. At advan...

Re: Bikes with BREMBO front calipers

Well noted. Hence get yourself the Brembo made calipers in order to improve the braking of your bike. Check on egay or with any of the salvage specialists ...

Re: Alternative battery/fuel pump life?

Yes Humphrey I agree. But this can happen under difficult conditions and if the battery is not treated well. You might also want to look out for a LiFePo4 battery. Much lighter, much smaller and more durable. But also much more expensive. See for example http://www.ever-power.com.tw/en/product_2.htm...

Re: Bikes with BREMBO front calipers

Morning from Germany! There are no wide-spread reports about such a problem with the brake calipers back here in Germany. However people usually have problems properly bleeding the circuit. In fact on my R12S the brakes worked very well. I just changed the calipers because of fading under extreme co...

Re: Alternative battery/fuel pump life?

The most popular replacement is actually more expensive than any stock battery. Its the hawker odyssey PC680.

If you want to save big time go for any of the battery brands in Japan (I do not know any).

Re: Bikes with BREMBO front calipers

Strange. Maybe you have a a series with increased tolerances. Anyway if you have done all this then any further online-analysis would be kind of crystal ball reading. If you opt for the brembos I indicated to you which ones to look for.

Re: Alternative battery/fuel pump life?

Never buy a battery from BMW ... They charge insane prices. Go buy an aftermarket battery. The BMW is relatively hassle free. And everything is within easy reach. However there are some sensitive things like proper synch (which is a tricky task) and setting the valves. Changing the fuel filter is no...

Re: Alternative battery/fuel pump life?

Humphrey, changing the fuel filter on the 11R is not trivial and quite a task. You need to empty and remove the tank. Be careful and note/indicate the two fuel lines! Then remove the pump/filter unit from inside the tank. Get that whole thing out without bending anything is a task. Then remove the f...

Re: Alternative battery/fuel pump life?

Hi Humphrey, suggest you get yourself a Yuasa or any other battery with near the same values/dimensions as the BMW battery. Changing the fuel pump is not necessary in my opinion. What is necessary however is a change of the fuel filter in certain intervals. You could get yourself the repair manual f...

Re: Idehtifying ABS Brakes

You have ABS if and when your bike has a metal ring with plenty of little holes inside the front left brake disc and inside the rear brake disc. Also there should be a sensor reading that ring (its a black little plastic knob). Suggest you also give it a try. Find yourself a little side-street with ...

Hello Mike, although I have never owned the RS (which one are you talking about - the R100RS? R1100RS? R1150RS?) but bearing in mind that the RS shares the same engine/drivetrain/mechanics with all the other models (just the plastic wrapping is different) it shares the same issues/weaknesses with th...

Re: Bikes with BREMBO front calipers

The brake calipers are known to be really good. They rarely fail. Under extreme conditions (race track for example) they show signs of fading. Thats why I got hold of a set of golden brembo P4 calipers which have been adapted to fit my R1200S (I think they originally came from the Aprilia Mille). Th...
