Re: Oil Usage
Still consuming oil that late in the game is a sign of a R that was babied early in its life. I was lucky that my BMW salesman (Keith, a great man, may he RIP) told me when I bought it to not baby the bike, and to use the entire power band. Don't beat it, but make sure that the entire rpm range is e...

I highly suggest a book by David Hough, "Proficient Motorcycling". This book is full of so much good stuff. After 30 years of riding, I still learn things from this book. After learning the concepts in this book, you will be the "expert" in your crowd. https://www.amazon.com/Prof...

Re: Oil full and not burning or cloudy oil check window?
Unless you see a puddle of oil under your bike, you are fine. When on the kickstand, the oil glass should be at half or less, but never empty. The sight glass is the dipstick, as long as you see the line in the sight glass, there is more oil hiding in the places Rob states above. If you take a ride,...

Lycra wicking long sleeve shirts. Cycle shops sell this stuff (Reebok, UnderArmor) but it always seemed pricey to me. Cabela's has fall sales after bass fishing season winds down, and they have a line called GuideGear, long sleeve wicking shirts for fishing in the sun. I picked 1 of these up for $20...

Re: (new rider) wind while riding at 50 mph uncomfortable
What is the history of the bike? You bought it used? How old are the tires? Has the bike been sitting still for any extended periods? Tires that don't move for a couple of years will be brittle, even if there is plenty of tread left. Also, could it be possible that a tire balancing lead was lost? Th...

Re: Backup Lights - not good to see in front of you
Take the bike to a BMW dealer, get the frame thoroughly inspected by a BMW mechanic, and get a written estimate, and make the perpetrator pay for new OEM replacement parts and labor. Trying to find used EBay parts is not doing you any favors, but it will be a favor for the one that hit you. Just my ...

Welcome to the board!
The year of the bike?
What does the manual say is the proper oil weight for the bike?
My R1150R takes US SAE 20-50
I have been running synthetic since 29k, and it's near 50k now, synth really quiets a boxer down.
But, with all those miles, you may know more!

Re: Always have to use "choke" on cold start
MM, Your bike is performing exactly like mine for the past 13 years. Under 50 degrees, the fast idle is required a little longer. When you start the bike, put the fast idle switch at half way for about a minute, minute and a half. I have found that the idle switch at half (with no hand on it) will w...

Re: Lowering a 1150?
Klaus at EPM built my hyper pros 6 years ago, after my OEM's had it. I had my bike lowered 3/4 of an inch, as I am inseam challenged, and my Sargent seat's width took some foot reach away. I have great footing now! After 7 years on OEM's, and 6 on Hyper Pro's, Hyper Pro's win. Not even a contest. I ...

Re: Riding in the rain.
Been riding in gully washers for 13 years with the R1150R. Never had an issue. One flash storm was so hard there was 2 inches of water on the road it was coming down so fast. I was close to home, and I should have gotten off the bike, but I didn't. The bike was a stallion. Get a rainex type product ...

Re: How do you ride your 1150?
Your bike has the tall 6th gear, or overdrive gear. Made for the autobahn, and cruising at 80mph, at 4k rpm. I have found that 73mph is the lowest speed that gear likes. The "OD" gear went away with the 2005 models, it became an option, and very few USA bikes arrived in 2005 with it. 2004 ...

Re: Valve Noise?
The valves are more noisy than other makes, but you should contact the previous owner and ask when the last valve adjustment was done. Along with sync'ng the throttle bodies.
