Re: Tar Snakes and Tire Wear

Same issue here, I call them tar pythons, these can be 6-8 inches wide, very unsettling, our temps here have just gone in to the upper 90's-105 F this week, the oilhead and the airheads have the same issue, the Guzzi, doesn't bother it at all, go figure !! My last set of Michelin's on the oilhead, d...

Re: Battery Thoughts/Questions

What kind of riding did you do, slow speed, highway speeds ??
Do you have a lot accessories on ??
I've never had a charging system issue in 17 years and 70,000 miles of operation, until the battery starts to show signs of age .

Re: Weird rear brake binding issue

I think it's anti-rattle spring, keeps the pads from moving around .

Re: Weird rear brake binding issue

Just a thought, I've heard of this on older airhead bikes . There usually is a small port at the bottom of the fluid reservoir not the hole that supplies fluid to the master cylinder piston . If that port is clogged, brake pressure gets trapped in the line and caliper, the brake stays applied . With...

Re: LED Signal Bulb Issue

I would look at the contacts inside the turn directional on the faulty side, possibly one is corroded, or poor contact between the bulb and contact .
You could try swapping the bulbs from each side to see if the problem moves with the bulbs, or stays on left side .

Re: LED Signal Bulb Issue

Do you have the original flasher unit ?? If you do, you need one specifically for LED's, not enough resistance in the LED's for the original to work properly .

Re: Baby, it's cold out there...

I use a mesh jacket, when the heavier jacket is too hot . I don't know if riders in hot areas like mine realize how hot the road surfaces are , on a typical 110 F, 43-44 C, fresh asphalt or freshly sealed asphalt, in the late afternoon can have a surface temp of 195 F, 90-91 C . Old gray looking asp...

Re: Need new tires....what do you like?

My last set of tires, I ' downgraded ', a lower cost tire . I put Michelin Pilot Power tires on and no issues , 90% of my riding is commuting to work, so I didn't need a more sticky compound . They are great in wet conditions .

Re: No start in cold

Dry oilite bearings at each end of the armature shaft will cause high power draw and slower rotation speed . Had this on two of my airhead bikes, also, below 10 volts, the ignition system won't work very well . Use a non-conductive high melting point grease . I've used Mobil 1 oil on the oilite bear...

Re: No start in cold

Easiest solution to your extra battery, is to get another motorcycle !!! If you do decide to take the starter apart for a good cleaning and lubrication, use a grease that is non-conductive and has a high melting point . Another option I used, on one of my airhead bikes, when I didn't have time due t...

If by chance you need replacement parts for the starter, Euromoto Electrics has some of the common parts .

I've noticed that I get 4-5 miles more per gallon if I use 91 octane .
On regular 87 octane, 172 miles to low fuel warning, with 91, 192-196 miles until the fuel light comes on .

Re: Puff of blue smoke

If you leave the bike on the side stand over night, it will emit a bit of smoke on the first start up . Nature of the engine . All my airheads do this if I leave them on the side stand overnight . I don't know if this is true or not, I have been told that the BMW boxer engines don't have valve guide...

I was born and raised in the Chicago area, to the best I can remember ethanol was added to the fuel supply around mid '70's, I think it was 5% then . I never saw any negative aspect to alcohol on a vehicle, except loss of fuel mileage . I'm an aircraft mechanic for an airline, early on in my career,...

It's a well known fact that broken frayed wires in the are of the steering head area, due to plastic cable ties being installed too tight at the factory . I'd try turning the key to the run position and wiggle the wire harness around the steering head and see if you can duplicate the failure . You m...
