Re: Catalytic converter removal
This is an interesting topic and I agree with just about all comments. With the cat turned into a resonator plus stock muffler I could not honestly say that the bike definitely, absolutely, performs better. With a Staintune muffler the note is pleasant but still not loud even with the removeable res...

Re: Catalytic converter removal
Hi Snowprick, I reckon opening the cat is a nice option because the exhaust still looks stock and it doesn't attract unwanted attention. Although you probably won't have any trouble finding a TIG the job can be done using a stick welder using stainless steel rods. I did it this way and you can't tel...

Re: Safety v looks & sound
Hi Beemeridian, Perhaps this gets down to an interpretation of what 'dropping its guts' means. In the automotive culture with which I have been closely involved for the last 30 years, it does not necessarily mean a catastrophic failure such as a rod through the crankcase which would provide the outc...

Safety v looks & sound
Over the years there has been a zillion comments and queries about mufflers and tailpipes. One common, and apparently popular, conversion is to stick a stub on the end of the cat. I have serious reservations about ending the exhaust anywhere short of the rear of the rear tyre. If the engine drops it...

Cat becomes resonator
It is certainly nice to ride a bike with a good note - it is also nice to hear the induction noise on a stock R1150R. So - because I like to keep all my standard bits 'just in case', I managed to get a cat that had been removed from another R1150R. I very carefully sliced open the seam on the cat wi...

At last - no embarrassment
It used to be soooo embarrassing on a hot restart. Rattle knock etc. So after following this topic for years (first started viewing in 2003 before purchase), a couple of posts and one earlier upgraded tensioner, I have finally fitted the latest LH cam chain tensioner as fitted to the R1200s. Oh what...

More research needed
There seems to be a certain amount of confusion over this LH tensioner problem and I am one of the confused (ps - see my recent post). The workshop staff at my local dealer are nice blokes but don't have the depth of knowledge to be able to offer the overall sequence of supercessions to this compone...

chain tensioner? more than one problem
Hi guys, I remember this topic from years ago and I think the problem may not be resolved because not everyone is talking about the same symptoms. Some claim to suffer rattle on a cold start, others on a hot restart but not on cold and some when idling and hot with a few K's on the bike - or variati...

loom failure
Over the last week or so I have had an intermitant problem with not being unable to cancel the indicators on my '04 R1150R (Australian model). I recalled reading some riders having premature switch failure because, like me, they tend to cancel the indicators more than necassary just to be safe. Howe...

try injector cleaner
This may not solve your problem but it is always worth adding some injector cleaner to your fuel at least every 10,000 kls. Dirty injectors stuff up the spray pattern which is critical for instant response as well as mixture. As part of my old workshop business I used to do well from cleaning dirty ...

Relieve sore knees
I sometimes rest one leg at a time on the barrels when my poor old knees start to hurt. I generally wear Draggin jeans when riding - over the boot rather than tucked into the boot as some prefer. I only do it for short periods at a time because I think it is bad riding practice for obvious bike cont...

Horses for courses
G'day DJ, I am not really a newie I just contribute so infrequently that I forgot my password. I'm on the Sunshine Coast in Qld. At anything over 80 kph, with the fly/sport/speedster screen angled up a few degrees, the wind hits my helmet just below the visor depending how bad my posture is. With th...

Air flow test
An interesting subject this screen/no screen thing. I am six foot and 90 kilos and have been swapping between no screen, the standard (in Aust. on an 04 R) sport screen and an Eagle Screens touring screen made in Western Australia. With the sport screen fitted and angle steepened a few degrees, I ta...
