Re: Thank You All!

Yeah, just something different. I was going to get a newer bike once I hit 100k miles, but that got derailed by the accident. There's a low mileage 2004 1150R near my house for sale, which is tempting, but after 13 years it's time for something different. Maybe a R1200R or older RS? Maybe a F800GT? ...

Re: Thank You All!

Thanks, CycleRob. Yes, I did slow down enough to walk away from the accident.

Yes, I'm just saying goodbye to the R1150R section; you'll start to see me in the other sections once I decide which model to buy.

Thank You All!

I'm sad to say that my beloved 2004 R1150R of 13 years (bought new in 2003) and 92833 miles is gone. I driver crossed two lanes during an illegal u-turn and hit me. Fortunately, I was able to slow down enough minimize the impact; however, enough damage was done that the insurance company decided to ...

Re: Leaky oil fill plug

If you don't get all of the oil off the cap o-ring and the seat, it will leak again. I've been down this road quite a bit. Use brake cleaner or some other solvent that will not dissolve the o-ring to completely remove ANY traces of oil. So, spray some brake cleaner on a paper towel and remove all of...

Re: New Member - New R1150R owner - Nervous as hell !!

One of the descisions of buying something is dertermining if you can afford the item. This goes with houses, bikes, cars, golf clubs...etc. If you have reservations about affording maintencance or the reliability of BMW's, there are other brands that are more reliable, much cheaper and have a larger...

72k Mile Service Results

I just completed my 72k mile service, which is really a 24k mile service with an alternator belt change. I just wanted to post my findings/observations for the board. I ride in a wide range of temps ranging from the 20's to 110+ throughout the year. I ride solo 99% of the time. I use BMW 75/140 in t...

Re: Can hot weather hurt your bike

I've been riding my 1150 in and around Phoenix for 72k miles with no problems at all. I do use synthetic for some added protection in stop-and-go traffic, though.

Re: Michelin Pilot Road vs Pilot Road2?

Do you guys hear any noises (e.g., whining???) from your PR2's? After I installed them, they were quiet and fun. After about 500 miles, they started to whine when making left/right hand turns at slow speeds. I've played with air pressures (32/36, 36/38, 38/40) and shock settings, which didn't seen t...

Re: Clutch Spline Failure Analysis

One point was missed: Other expensive vehicles have their faults as well, BMW cars for example. The cooling system is only good for about 50k miles before you run the risk of a cooling system failure that can cause your engine to fail. This is well documented on several BMW forums. These people are ...

Re: Clutch Spline Failure Analysis

I've been reading about spline failues for 3+ years on this and other sites. In short, the problem appears to be a mis-alignment issue; go to the BMW ST site and you'll find an in-depth analysis and fix. I will speak up for one the ones that hasn't failed in 70k miles. The Internet breeds fear; it's...

Numbers and what the mean

I just made my 333rd post on another section of this forum. The number 333 reminded me of my Air Force days, in particular, my time at the 333rd Aircraft Maintenance Unit at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson. I was a crew chief on the A-10A Warthog. After two years at Davis-Monthan, I spent three years in...

Re: Oil Temp Gauge Install and Initial feedback...

After 68k miles, I really don't think there's a need for additional cooling fans. I ride in temps well above 100f for at least four months each year, some of this is in stop-and-go traffic on a very congested highway, with no heating issues. I do use synthetic oil to help combat the excessive heat, ...

Re: Final Drive Oil ?

It kind of depends where you live. I ride in a lot of hot temps, so I've been using 75-140 for 67k miles on the advice of my BMW mechanic. People that say that using 75-140 trashed their drive is a claim based on speculation.

Re: Ultimate stocking stuffer??

I used to fly RC planes (props only) for years. It was a lot of fun and expensive. Recently, I went to a RC air show and someone had a A10-A, with two ducted-fans motors. I can tell you that after working on the full scale A10-A for five years, the RC A10-A had every detail as the original. Thanks f...

Re: Engine failure

Will a low pressure(~30-50 psi) leakdown test provide the results as a high pressure leakdown test? Also, with a high pressure leakdown test (100 psi), will you have to lock the flywheel/tranny down so that the pressure does not turn the engine over? I guess you can leave the bike in high gear, eh? ...

I usually average around 45 mpg; 32 mpg when I'm trying to keep up with my hooligan friends :D

I've hit 50+ mpg when I cruise ~70 mph in 6th on the freeway. I'm currently weighing in at 230 lbs. Doh!

Re: Who has the MOST miles without any major failures.

'04 1150R; bought in late 2003. 67k miles Items replaced: 2 primary stick coils at 55k miles (one was bad; replaced the other as a good measure). 2 secondary spark plug wires (replaced as preventative measure given that I ride in 100+ temps for 6 months). 2 H5 headlight bulbs. Rebuilt Ohlins shocks,...
