I believe they moved the cat from the Y pipe to the can in these later models, hence the heat in the standard can, compared to the Remus which you can put your hand on.

On the other hand 2,800 miles is better than 28,000. Abs is something else to go wrong, and you can use the lack of it to negotiate a better price.

As far as I know the cat is in the can on the '11 models, that is why you lose the heat when you change the can. I understand the back pressure comment, but I thought that was part of the exhaust valve's job?

I dont think the end can gives any performance gain, I got it for the looks, sexier note and heat reduction. As a bonus it is a good bit lighter too. My new R1200r also wont go into first when it is cold without letting the clutch in and out a couple of times. I'm not particularly worried about it as their demonstrator bike did the same thing when I rode it. At least it dosen't make the horrible Honda crunch. If it still does it in 23 months time...
