They are saving weight with smaller generator and battery. More plastic, less metal. dbrick's question is interesting. I don't know the answer.

Yes, BMW has done a good job of incorporating some Japanese bike technology.
Having ridden the R9T and R_LC versions, I'm more in love with my 2012 Roadster, and less a fan of the new models.

Concur with CycleRob and Don's comments. It's a shame the new LC_ R models lack the Telelever. Hope that it makes a comeback.

Not sure about the next generation R1200 HexHead motor, but the past generation R1100/1150 OilHead requires the crankcases to be split in half to replace the camchain guide rails, a complete engine disa$$embly.
Quick check of HexHead Haynes manual 2.62....that is still the ca$e.

Re: Another adavatage of an R1200R
Motorcycle cop pulled a kid on a sport bike with a very loud exhaust in a low gear turning high rpms. I was motoring past on the Roadster in 6th. gear, actually passing him, with screen, panniers, and ATG. Stock exhaust was barely audible. Surprised the cop ignored me. I was going faster than the kid.

Yes, me too. Ha-Ha. I have gotten in a pinch or two myself when I was alone, and I can sympathize with what you gentlemen are saying.
xprof, mend well and quickly Sir. Hope there are no more surprises like that this year.

Ammolab, sorry to hear about the cracking screen. 80mph into 40mph winds? That's a stout spring breeze. Please keep us posted as to how that turns out for you. Fingers crossed. Sounds like CeeBailey's gave excellent service to MTBeemer. Good to hear such reviews from satisfied customers. Guard saved...

Re: Last gen hex head vs. the new water boxer
The oil level sight glass and the filler cap are both on the right side, which is good. However, the location of the oil filter right over the left exhaust header is not so good. Under the engine is best for ease of access, avoiding the hot pipes, and using longer filters. The hot exhaust pipe is on...

Re: Questions from a prospective buyer
Welcome zend. Congratulations on the new machine, and welcome to the BMW motorcycle world. The ABS and ASC functions will be big safety assets for you as a relatively new rider. They both have improved to the point they are not intrusive in most riding situations. This motorcycle will help you be sa...

Re: Max wattage for Auxiliary driving lights
55-60 Watts max should be OK. IMO I used two 55W auxiliary H-3 halogen lights wired directly to the battery with an inline fuse and on/off switch. No problems. Heater grips on high and the headlight on high beam at night. 1996 R1100R. Most of my driving was 3-4,500 rpm in high gear. I also think ext...

That's a great idea macx. I use a double thick fleece throat coat that stretches on over my head. Cold air finding it's way to bare skin when it's freezing weather isn't pleasant. Hope to see your pics.
