A tour through the Alps

This summer I did an 11-day tour through the Swiss and Italian Alps. Here's a video of the highlights.https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... MQxsfV-QcQ

Re: I just retired...

Mike, I'm only a couple years behind you, and not a riding day goes by (and many a restless night, too), when I don't consider the diminishing odds against surviving the next ride. I only have to read about a head-on crash on a local road to imagine that farm pickup or distracted teen or harried soc...

Re: Finally Upgraded to the R1200R

My '07 R1200R has just over 20 K on the clock. Only two issues so far: The above-mentioned fuel filler well corrosion, and a slight warping of the front brake rotors, perhaps as a result of repeated practice panic stops from 80 mph. I replaced them with aftermarket rotors, which work fine, but aren'...

A hairy ride, not on a motorcycle.

This was incidental to the motorcycle tour through the Alps, but it sure makes a good story.

Re: Long Distance with the R1200R

Greetings from Vermont, Sun Ra. I'm an aging returnee to motorcycling. I regained my skills on an R65LS, and moved up to my '07 R1200R about 4 years ago. It's been a superb bike for my purposes, mostly back-road running, but some long touring, too. I have never felt that the bike limited me in any w...

Re: Cold weather exercise? To start or not to start.

Update from Vermont, where it hit 40 today. I got up after a restless night, awake at 3 am fretting over what I had read here in response to my original post. I actually dreamed I had damaged my innocent roadster by forcing it awake from a subzero hibernation. Great comments, BTW, and appreciate the...

Cold weather exercise? To start or not to start.

Okay, I admit it, I'm a wuss. When the temp gets much below 30 degrees F. or the road is covered in slush, I leave the roadster hooked up to the umbilical cord in the (non-heated) garage. So today it was about 5 below, and I thought, gee, my battery is over 7 years old. Maybe I ought to be thinking ...

Re: R1200R Decal just too appealing

Geez, I never noticed before that some R-bikes have decals.
Oops. Upon closer inspection, turns out the R1200R on my tank does seem to be some sort of applied material, with a heavy gloss coat over it. The pinstripes, however, are actually painted on.

Geez, I never noticed before that some R-bikes have decals. Wasn't paying attention, I guess. Makes me appreciate my pin-striped '07 black beauty all the more, now that I know not all her litter mates sport those lovely painted model designations. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5326/9989492665_327572...

Re: Sculptures in the Green Mountains

I wish I had taken the bags off. The bike has such nice lines in the "naked" configuration, it would have looked like it belonged there.

Re: Saddlebags

Yikes! I had already lost 2 screws on one side when I noticed one of the remaining screws halfway out. I replaced the missing ones with some hardware-store metric socket heads (not stainless). Probably a good place for some LocTite as soon as I can get permanent replacements. '07 with just under 18K.

Re: Is the R1200R Motorcycle Nirvana?

When I decided to upgrade from my sweet little '84 R65LS, I had a few basic requirements: Fuel injection, ABS, heated grips (I live in Vermont), shaft drive, and weight 500 lbs or less. That narrowed my choices considerably. I lucked into a clean, black pinstriped '07 with barely 5000 miles, and hav...

Re: moto accident

Happy to hear a survivor's story, especially when it involves lots of protective gear. Yours is not the first report of the extra "safe zone" provided by the boxer engine, handlebars, and hard bags. I actually consider the luggage part of my "PPE". (That's industry-speak: Persona...

Replacement front rotors

I know there's been a lot of discussion about brake shimmy, but has anyone had any experience with aftermarket replacement rotors? I believe TRW makes 3 versions for this bike, none of which appear to be stainless. Any comments?

Re: New owner with questions

Ditto on the Mudsling. Price is right, piece of cake to install, looks almost OEM, and totally works. Other good bits and pieces: Versa Turn/Brake/Running light; Cee-Bailey headlight protector; Your-choice oil cooler protection - I cut out a piece of 1/4" SS mesh; As much 3M black reflective ta...

Re: R1200R - would it be a wise choice?

My previous bike was an 84 R65LS, and since I'm not getting any stronger, I wanted a new bike that wasn't a whole lot heavier than the little airhead. Also wanted ABS, fuel injection, and luggage. The R1200R at first seemed like overkill - the F800ST was also in the running. But the 1200 just felt s...

Re: Cracked headlight lens *grumble*

I, too, ordered the headlight protector from Cee Bailey. The first one they sent was too flat. I complained, and they sent me another one with the proper "deep dish" shape. It's worked well for 2 years, but now the velcro (?) tabs are losing their grip. The lens has fallen off twice in the...

Re: How much slop in your driveline?

Sounds like your bike's rear tire's getting worn. As the tire wears, the tire's profile changes, and when the bike's contact patch moves from one position on the tire to to another, sometimes a different rubber compound is exposed. Both of those can generate a change in sound. How many miles on it?...

Re: pushing the range limits!

Jeez, maybe it's the good gas up here in Vermont, but I usually don't get a low-fuel light until around 200 miles. I usually put in about 5 gallons. The 40-mile warning seems pretty accurate - I've gone as low as 12 miles. I usually keep it below 6K on the tach, and figure I'm averaging about 50 mpg...
