Re: Saddlebags

Reviving this old thread and subject. My side cases need a rework as the finish has faded badly. Spots on the black that you would think are deposits of some sort, but I have confirmed that they are worn off finish. Don't really know what this finish is. Paint or whatever. Anyway, I had followed the...

Re: Wheel Flange recall

I'd agree with you John. They say specifically that the problem happens when the bolts are over torqued. It's really bad to over tighten wheel lugs on alloy wheels. You'd have to be a dip to go so tight as to crack the flange.

Re: 2011 and on R1200R has a breather plug on FD???

Good info Don. As it happens, I rebuild right angle gear drives as part of my work. Have done several hundred. They are much larger than what you see on a bike or car, but the taper roller bearings are really pretty easy to shim. I do suppose that taper rollers would be much more expensive than the ...

Re: 2011 and on R1200R has a breather plug on FD???

Steve H. I think the forum slow down is a function of a very harsh winter. I'm not thinking about bikes until just recently. (Just bought a Yamaha FJ-09 in fact). Perhaps the traffic will pick up as spring sets in. About the bearings being sealed. Would it not be fair to say that the output bearings...

Re: R1200 Water Cooled

ebincia, I'm waiting to sit on one to make a decision. Did you see one at the show to confirm the riding position? I'm looking for more leg room. Also very interested in the new FJ-09. Will wait to see both close up before committing.

Re: I would go for a non ESA bike.....

I'd be interested in comments from people with ESA on the long term aspects. Do the shocks hold up better than the standard OEM units do? Do you switch modes often, and does it make a significant difference? It appears that the 2015 bikes are going to be pushing this feature more by grouping ESA wit...

Sounds like I could put RS bars and a windshield on my R and avoid the cost of a new bike =D>

Re: New R1200x seating positions.

Scott, Was there any difference between the R and RS as to leg room (seat to pegs)? Do you think of these two bikes as the same machine with different handlebars? Or are they really different?

Re: New to me R1200R

Rear drive capacity is 180cc. I'm using Mobil1 85W-90 (I think). Opinions vary, but I change every other oil service, i.e.10,000 miles.

You're gonna like this bike. Very easy to work on, and the 1200 motor holds valve adjustments very well. Just change fluids and tires and ride the thing :D

Re: New to me R1200R

What kind of dealer would you be buying from that doesn't do a full service to the bike before they sell it? You might check with them so as not to duplicate their work. Do change the rear end fluid with the correct stuff. Don't know about the spoked wheels, but (again) why would you want them? You ...

Re: AIR HAWK Recommendations?

I'm recently returned from a 7700 mile trip. Leaving Mass and going west across the TransCan to Banff, then south to Reno, and back home via the mostly I-70 route. Pleased to report that the AirHawk-R proved to be a life saver. I was able to ride all day in relative comfort. My main issue now is tha...

Re: Riding Style & Tranny Bearing Life

John, I would think that the bearing life in the tranny is more a function of the oil you use and the change interval. Riding style would more likely affect the shifting parts. Oddly enough I recently changed the trans oil, using the same Castrol stuff as always, and quickly found that the shifting ...

Re: Fuel Strip finally addressed by BMW..sort of

I just got my letter this week also. I think the timing of this warranty extension is interesting: Perhaps they are now willing to extend the warranty because they finally figured out the problems and now have a reliable strip to install. Previously they didn't make a formal commitment because they ...

Re: Delayed Start-Up Proceedure

Kevin, I agree with your idea about a poor electrical connection. But suggest you start with the easier things to reach. Clean up and tighten the battery connections, and grounds etc. If that doesn't have any change, then you can proceed to the harder items. Also, some snooping with the volt meter m...

Just ordered the 'R' model. It delivers Friday so I can test it on a Sunday ride of several hours. Good thing to test before starting the trip!

Re: AIR HAWK Recommendations?

Thanks for the response guys. Looks like I should order a new "R" model which comes in only one size. I'm nervous about this because it will mean leaving my Alaska Leather sheepskin at home. I've liked it, but 500+ mile days are too much for the current setup. I'm having to stop every half...

AIR HAWK Recommendations?

Does anyone use an air hawk seat pad? Coming up on a long trip and thinking this might be a good idea. Which model is the right size? Any reviews?

Thanks guys.

Re: battery light and yellow warning triangle before start

At startup you should see upper left blinking abs lamp: center dash neutral lamp "N"; and to the right of that the red battery discharge lamp. This is after the precheck is completed, which lasts about 5 seconds or so. If you are seeing the yellow triangle, something isn't right.

Re: Another Tire Thread

Don, The only front tire I've had that doesn't cup is the Avon. Works great and holds up longer than the rear. I had early wear out on the last Avon rear I used, so have moved away from them. Also, on ADV there is a thread about delaminating rear Avon's that kind of scared me.
