Re: In appreciation

I'm riding a 2015 R1200RT so thought it was about time to rehome my 2004 oilhead (sold in 2012) parts & tools. The thought to do so was triggered by a particularly generous act by a member of another forum I frequent. I'd been looking for an OEM pillion seat for my 2015 RT for about a year, with...

In appreciation

When I returned to motorcycling about 10 years ago with the purchase of my first ever BMW (a 2004 1150RT) I sought guidance, encouragement, humour and knowledge from this forum as I went about doing my own scheduled maintenance – and I appreciated it. The 1150 is long gone but I can still remember s...

Re: Riding in strong wind

The pdf link below is a land version of the Beaufort Scale that works very well for land-based observations of wind effects and how those effects relate to wind speed / force. http://www.weather.gov/media/iwx/webpag%20...%20_Chart.pdf Thanks Jed, just what I needed. From the chart I can now guessti...

Re: Riding in strong wind

Yet another ride in strong winds. I've obviously offended the wind gods. Today's observations- 14) While generally the wind direction remains pretty constant, this doesn't seem to apply when riding through a cutting. The solid walls appear to make the wind swirl, forming eddies that can collide and ...

In praise of bootmakers

I have learnt the hard way that buying cheap gear is a waste of time. Quality gear costs and lasts, but sometimes needs repair or alteration. I'm lucky enough to have an old school bootmaker within riding distance. I rarely take a pair of shoes to him but he is always happy to repair/alter my riding...

Did you replace them both? Have a look at the whole pag...

Re: Speedometer accuracy

Riding a m/c especially when touring is a great time to think, to make connections between thoughts, and to come to conclusions. Thought 1 I recently had a policeman check the accuracy of the speedometer on my 1150RT. The speedo was showing a steady 130 k.p.h. and he only booked me for 117. Assuming...

The only bike that ever stranded me....TWICE... (once 800 km from home) was a BM.

I still ride one and love it!

Sad end to a good cause

I recently found myself part way through a 3000 km trip sharing alpine roads with literally thousands of other bikes. I soon discovered they were on an annual charity ride to raise money for childhood cancer. A great cause, but this years ride will be remembered for the three riders who were killed ...

Re: Roadside Assistance

Mark, Until recently I never had cause to think much about roadside assistance - BMW's or anyone else's But after a breakdown during a trip on my 2012RT I now know what to look for - 1) prompt attendance by a roadside assistant (mine was within the hour) 2) towing to somewhere that can fix the probl...

Switch block failures

Three weeks ago the blinker switch on the LH switch block failed when I was 50 km from home. Replaced under warranty - no big deal Last week the start/kill switch on the RH switch block failed. This time my wife & I were 800 km from home and loaded up. Nearest BMW dealer is 200 km away. Now this...

Re: servo brakes success stories

My servo/ABS 2004 R1150RT had 125000 km on it when sold last year.
No problem with the brakes - but I was conscientious about flushing the wheel circuit every year and the control circuit every 2 years as per service schedule.
Brakes were great though a little bitey. I loved them.
