I wouldn't worry about the bike or anything having gone mad. As the last response pointed out, there are likely benign reasons for this. What I'd do is do a manual calculation, i.e. not rely on the display only but calculate the consumption over 2-3 tanks by hand.

What everyone else said, plus, because I had that problem, give it a good look over for leaks also under the engine along where the engine and transmission components connect. I needed some engine seals replaced and had the ABS pump fail. Those were the only problems I had in 8 years.

Wow, I would not have thought that something like this can happen so quickly, i.e. from 5-10 seconds of the bike running on its side. Best of luck with the replacement / repair / etc.!
