Re: Replacement handgrips from China?

The Ariete have been perfect. I'm glad I spent a little bit more $$.

Re: Shell Rotella T-4

I remember one veteran of this site that was a very close friend--MikeCam. He had I think at least 5 and possibly 6 BMW's in his garage. Used Rotella 15/40 in all of 'em. Under $15 a gallon at Walmart.

Re: One heated grip

I had a failed left grip for a couple years. Finally got around to troubleshooting this past summer. Burned heating element within grip. I was replacing the worn out grip covers anyway, it wasn't difficult to find the burnt and severed wire on the grip tube and do a splice/repair. New ones are expen...

Re: Is This the Sign of Dreaded Spline Failure? No Power Over 5k RPM

Good morning-here anyway! There is no leakage, the shop confirmed that it is the clutch slipping. I watched the 2 hour Chris Harris video on replacing the clutch plate etc. and I thinks it's a bit above my skills. I went through the ADV link but didn't quite understand it all. It seems to me that t...

Re: Need new tires....what do you like?

I've run Shinko Raven 009's for near 50K. Very happy with handling, tread life etc. About 5K ago I switched to Shinko 705's (dual sport tire). Really love those. Not as smooth of course but I'm much more confident when I get off pavement onto gravel roads and the occasional dirt.

Re: Hot lead off starter solenoid for electrical acc ?

Years ago I attached the SAE plug pigtail to my battery and use it to this day. I don't pull my tank any more than I have to. And I've pulled it plenty! The fasteners have a habit of wearing out, you really need to use caution when working the QD's including lubing the O-rings each time on the QD pr...

Re: ABS Failure

The ABS system also looks for a strong voltage from the battery/charging system. A weak battery will give faults as well. I agree with sykospain in that do all you can to troubleshoot the system. Including an ABS service/flush. But if it still fails a removal is pretty easy and relatively straight f...

Re: Roadster Lazy Susan

I hadn't seen this thread in many years. Thanks for resurrecting it! And yeah it was my idea. I had no room to turn the bike around and it filled the need. A couple years later I saw a more refined version in a motorcycle magazine for about $180.00. I still have the one I made so many years ago. Doe...

Re: Brake pedal height adjustment?

I'll add a bit of personal experience with the ABS system on the R. When I bought my 04 used in 2007 it was my first BMW with ABS. I didn't know any better so I continued to use the brakes as I always had. First a bit of rear brake applied followed by front. It took me 20,000 miles, 2 sets of rear p...

Yeah, heck of a deal on the battery. I too found a good deal on a starter on Amazon. About $75 shipped. It's been doing well for over a year now.

Re: No start in cold

Looked up the battery. Says it is maintenance free with no need to ever add water. So I guess skip that step. Amazon has odyssey for sale at $86 now. Not sure if this is battery, starter, or thick oil. I would hope that I could start it in the 30's Where on Amazon did you see the PC680 for $86? I s...

Re: Downsizing Tires

I've gone up a size on the rear but not down. But in case this helps are Shinko tires available where you are? I've been running Shinko 705's for many thousands now and really like them. They're a pretty darn good dual sport tire that seem to do very well on the R. I guess I've 5K on the front with ...

Re: Clear Lens Breakdown

My dealer tried to tell me I had to buy the entire turn signal assembly as I broke one lens last year on the day of the eclipse. Flipped the bike into a ditch. Minor damage to bike and I. I ended up picking up about 8 or 9 pieces of amber lens from the ditch. I'm glad I saved them. Superglue and bac...

Re: R1150R frame pivot removal - is it possible?

I've never replaced mine but it's probably a good idea. Mine is a 2004 with about 93K. I've been on this board since 2003 and I've never heard anyone say they needed to remove pivot. So would it damage bike? My guess would be no. But it's a guess.

" The 4 new spark plugs (£60 plus 20% Tax plus Labour) were tightened with some sort of torque spanner with a 4ft handle and were all rusty and dry fitted with some sort of oxide all over them presumably to act as a barrier to further oxidation." I've always feared the plugs would loosen o...

Re: BMW r1150r 2001, rpm lagging

That brings to mind a common issue years past on pre "twin-spark" models. US models-2003 and earlier. We called it "surging". Throttle slightly surging up and back ever so slightly at rpm's below 3000 roughly. I think it was emissions related from what I remember. One common fix ...
